Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (MWL) is proud to announce that the Whiston Hospital A&E Department Domestic Team has been named Healthcare Cleaning Team of the Year at the prestigious MyCleaning Awards 2026.
The awards are organised in collaboration with NHS England and receive hundreds of entries every year from across the UK’s healthcare sector. They recognise the unsung heroes and shine a spotlight on the important work they do.
Working at the centre of one of the busiest and most demanding A&E departments in the region, the Domestic Team at Whiston Hospital has demonstrated exceptional professionalism, resilience and compassion. Over the past year, the team has consistently achieved an outstanding score of 98% in the regular domestic quality audits, ensuring the hospital maintains a safe and clean environment at all times.
Clinical colleagues regard the team as an integral part of the department, highlighting their positive impact on patient experience, infection control and overall service delivery. Completing hundreds of cleans daily, they ensure smooth patient flow while maintaining exceptional hygiene standards. They respond with kindness, empathy and small acts of care, like offering a cup of tea to anxious patients, making a profound difference in moments of fear and uncertainty.
Rob Cooper, Chief Executive, said: “I’m delighted to see this brilliant team recognised nationally. The Whiston A&E Domestic Team plays a vital role in patient safety and experience, and their professionalism, compassion and pride in their work makes a real difference every day. This award is richly deserved.”
