Fundraisers from across the region will once again take on a thrill-seeking 60‑foot abseil down the front of Whiston Hospital this summer, part of Mersey and West Lancashire (MWL) Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, in support of the Trusts official charity, MWL NHS Charity.
The charity abseil, taking place on Friday 17th July 2026, will see participants step over the edge to support patient care and services across local hospitals including Whiston, St Helens and Newton. Last year, 90 brave charity champions took part in the event, raising over £22,000 and it is hoped that even more will be inspired to face the challenge this year.
Open to staff, local businesses, community groups and members of the public, the event requires no previous abseiling experience. All participants will receive full safety training and equipment on the day, delivered by qualified professionals.
Money raised will support projects including specialist medical equipment, enhanced hospital environments and initiatives that improve patient comfort and wellbeing. Most recently, the Charity funded bereavement memory boxes for families across the Trust following the loss of a loved one. These thoughtful boxes provide a safe place to keep treasured keepsakes and personal mementos.
Victoria Burrows, Head of Charity, said:
“The Whiston Hospital Abseil is an incredible way to bring people together while raising money that genuinely makes a difference for patients and their families. From abseiling down the building to showing support from the ground, every pound raised from the event helps us enhance patient care and experiences across our local hospitals”.
Registration for the abseil is free, with participants encouraged to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship for the charity. Spectators are welcome on the day to cheer on participants and help create a lively, supportive atmosphere.
